The event was down in the Isle of Dogs. A quick google revealed that the venue might be quite interesting . It was opposite the Cutty Sark at Greenwich which stands next to the Naval College. At the top of the hill is the Royal Observatory the home of Greenwich mean time. This being the average of when the sun is directly above. Apparently this can vary by 16 minutes.
Anyway we arrived early to set up and we could see that the hall was all laid up and ready for a wedding. It turns out that the hall was a saved from dereliction by a team of volunteers who spent hundreds of hours restoring. It was a project of ‘make do and mend’. The reward was the local community started to use the venue and there is now a chance that it will be completely renovated for the sake of the community.
When we had set up it was clearly a great chance to take it in turns to explore the area. After a little research it turned out that we could pass through a tunnel , which was right next to us. This then emerged on the other side at Greenwich where the Cutty Sark was. This was surrounded by numerous cafes and bistros. It was buzzing with tourists and people just enjoying a day out .
The tide ebbed and flowed and during the day there were numerous boat rides, fast and slow . There were even the good old Thames barges gently meandering up and down under sail and motor.
The wedding guests arrived and we were all set to go with a wonderful flurry of activity. I have never seen such an eclectic mix. The bride was Spanish, and there was a crowd of Romanians who were intent of having me in there pictures.
All went well with plenty for later . It was then the usual satisfying journey back. This time it proved a little different since Chelsea had been playing at home. I suppose the worst bit was when we hit the Kings Road, just down from Stamford Bridge, there were hundreds of supporters celebrating (again !). It was a long old trip home. Once we got to Greenford it was plain sailing.
