Cranleigh is a school I have looked after for many years. There are various events that they have and it is always a pleasure to return. This was no exception. It was a repeat booking for the Prep school. The set up was the same, right by the cricket pitch. Dudley was on hand and welcomed me along with his wife. They are a charming couple from South Africa and who have settled in the UK. This year there were a few ‘gap’ year students, specifically Josh who helped unload and set up. He certainly was a great help. It wasn’t long before the Head Chef popped over. Carol and I had exchanged emails and she fortunately remembered me from last year, as did a few of the groundsmen. The weather this year was a lot better. 2015 was very wet although not until the fireworks started.
This year it was all a lot better and there were also a lot more attendees. It was not so much the pupils but the fact that a few parents were expected to come.
Just as before I was well looked after and the kitchen sent a cup of tea and a selection of cakes. Never good for the figure, but who cares!
All was on schedule for the serve which was important since the fireworks were to start at 7.00 and everyone needed to have been served. It was Hog Roast in Cranleigh with jacket potatoes + cheddar and coleslaw. There were a couple of teachers who I had met before who helped serve and all was done in about 15/20 minutes. Then there were seconds. Instantly there was another queue of about twenty kids. I was slightly worried that we would need my emergency supply of rolls. It was not a problem as I had come with extra in case it had happened.
Then fireworks, the best ever and much the same as last year. There was then an embarrassing moment of ‘three cheers’ for George. Yes the pupils cheered and offered an endless stream of ‘thank you’s’ for providing the hog roast in Cranleigh. It was very satisfying and I was once again hopeful I would be back there next year.
