We’re always asked how long it takes to roast a hog using one of our machines, and the answer mainly depends on the weight of the animal. On average, it takes around six hours to prep and cook, so it’s not a quick process at all. Depending on the size of the pig, it can take between three and a half hours and eight hours. The easiest way to work it out is by weight. If you have a large pig that weighs 50kg, we would recommend that it’s cooked for at least five hours, which is a clear hour for every 10kg. The weather and location of cooking can also play a part in the time it takes, but at this time of year, on a warm summer day, around an hour per 10kg is a good bet.
For Samantha’s 8th birthday party that we recently catered, there were around 30 guests. Samantha’s parents had asked us to provide an average-sized pig, which is around 50kg and can actually feed between 100 and 120 guests. We recommended that we instead provide a smaller pig for this amount of people, and her parents settled on a 40kg pig for a hog roast in Kingsey, which would easily feed everyone with seconds or more (and was likely to leave leftovers for later, too).
On the day of the party, the sun shone down as we drove to the venue of the family home for the hog roast in Kingsey. We set up the hog roasting machine under our gazebo in the back garden, and prepared the pig for cooking for a few hours. It was actually a particular windy day in a windy location and this can play a part in increasing the cooking time, so we estimated up to 5 hours in all.
As the hog roasted away in its tray, we began to sort out the salad dishes and prepare the apple sauce and stuffing that we would add to the sandwiches. Then it was eventually time to carve off the pieces of crackling and slice into the meat, ready to stuff into fresh bread rolls for lots of screaming kids and their parents. We were glad we had given extra time for cooking, as we needed it in this wind. another successful hog roast in Kingsey!
