I am not sure how many years I have done this event in Chelsea. I remember the first time I thought it was the wrong venue or even worse the wrong date. I had to set up in the street, Gertrude Street. I was actually in the road about two hundred yards from the Kings Road. It all seemed a bit bizarre. This year was the same as in previous years, exactly the same spot, the same hitch up for power and water. It was lovely that nothing had changed. I was perhaps a bit earlier since the pig was a little larger. The numbers have gradually crept up. As usual I helped with the set up of other gazebos once I was up and running. Larna was on hand to offer advice. She is part of the committee and very precise in the way all is to be done. She also very kindly offers the use of her house in case needed. As I said it is all quite strange cooking in a street, passers by ask questions about the hog roast Chelsea, although some I have seen before. It is perhaps the only time I find to chat to the local traffic warden, who is ensuring that the street is clear. A little after she departs a local is looking for his car. He soon concludes it has been towed away – how much I asked, I believe he said £265 to get it back . Wow, that’s a lot.
Soon it was time to start setting up all the other stalls, and so I helped where I could, whilst ensuring that I was going to be ready with the hog roast Chelsea on time. By about 6 all was ready and by about 6.30 people started to arrive. There are many that like to graze, since there are lots of stalls with food. Gradually it gets busier and there is a great atmosphere. The Steel Band plays, people are buying raffle tickets and all is buzzing. By about 8.30 I have nearly sold out the hog roast Chelsea and it is time to pack up. Just an ice cream for the road and I am happy.
